I arrived at work today after the shortest commute ever – up two flights of stairs and 10 feet over. Life is sweet! I dug out the library manual that I brought with me and tried to figure out what to do first. Unfortunately, it appeared that I needed an internet connection to even get into the library records and my personal access code hasn’t been activated yet and won’t be for several days (a fact I found out at 4:00 this afternoon). Fortunately, one of the S@S staff members was working on some papers in the library and gave me her access code. Later in the day, the assistant librarian for the summer voyage stopped in to see me and gave me the library code for the internet too. I have a fighting chance now!
My next struggle was with the shelves in back of the service desk. They have covers that slide down from the top and I couldn’t figure out how to get them up. After a frantic e-mail to Mary, the S@S coordinator for the library at UVa, I was able to crank them up with great difficulty. They require a bit more muscle than I possess. Something to work on. The other thing that I’m finding difficult about the desk is getting behind it because it used to be a bar and the entrance to it requires ducking under the counter at one end. I look like an uncoordinated dork whenever I do it. No grace or style whatsoever. I should have taken yoga for the last four months and worked on my flexibility. I would have had a fighting chance at looking graceful if I had. Between the photo on my ID and ducking under the counter, my ego is taking quite a beating lately.
After lunch I took a quick walk around the harbor to enjoy the sun and warm up. Great Gawd Almight! It is freezing on the ship. I’m going to have to take heat breaks throughout the day so that I don’t turn into a popsicle. While walking around, I took a photo of the ship. It’s quite impressive sitting at the dock.

I had three goals to accomplish for the day: download the articles that the professors requested for their classes; find somebody named Sal who possesses the magic list of future library patrons and download that list; and find the magic room where all of the boxes of books are stored. I only had success with the first. Sal was in meetings all day and the boxes haven’t been loaded on the ship yet and probably won’t until tomorrow. This party that I mentioned in yesterday’s post is consuming everything and everyone on the ship. I hope I’ll have better luck tomorrow.
Tonight, I plan to skip dinner on the ship and find a restaurant in a section of San Diego called “Little Italy”. Although the food is good on the ship, I want to take the opportunity to see a bit more of the city while I’m here. It’s such a gorgeous place.
