We are slowly chugging our way towards Hawaii and everyone is in a frenzy of planning and scheming. The students are talking about going sky diving or snorkeling while all the old fogies, including me, are planning to take tours around the island or visit Pearl Harbor. The tour I'm taking is called the Oahu Grand Circle Island tour and it takes us to Diamond Head, the North Shore, Waimea Bay, the Dole Plantation and other locations. It sounds like we makes short stops to the major sites - just enough to tantalize us and make us wish we are spending many more days here.
Not much new has been happening in the library today. We continue to get materials on the shelves and make them available for the students. Our students workers are great - they are conscientious and eager to work on projects and staff the circulation desk. They already feel possessive about the library.
Tonight is the logistics lecture for Hawaii where the ship's doctor tries to put the fear of god into the students in the futile hope of getting them to behave while in port. We are also told other pertinent information like how to get back to the ship, what time we need to board, etc.
Other than that, not much has been happening here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I'll have much more interesting things to write tomorrow.
