Today has been a very productive day in the library. We are feeling much more confident about the state of our library materials. Eileen and I are hopeful that we will be able to get everything in order by early next week. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself! I also got all of the scanning done tonight. Bliss! Rapture! Joy!
I forgot to mention that the library has been renamed for this voyage. We are now the Information Spa! I think I told you in a previous message that this space used to be a bar so we are going with that theme. The students are also calling the bar itself the "knowledge bar". I got such a kick out of that. The students are starting to discover all the materials we have here and having been hanging out a lot more than in past days. This place is never quiet. Definitely not your typical library.
We had our first pre-port cultural lecture tonight. Every time we approach a port we have two nights of meetings - cultural and logistics. For the cultural we get to hear about the customs and other things we need to know in order not to insult the citizens. Tonight we had four Hawaiian students on board who talked about their home and one guy danced the traditional Hawaiian dance. He was great. After the students talked, several professors were asked to speak about Hawaii and then we were free for the rest of the evening.
Tomorrow night is the mandatory logistics meeting which tells us about safety, health and other issues (like when to report back to the ship). I'm guessing it won't be as interesting as tonight's lecture but probably much more useful.
It's time to close up the library for the evening and take my short commute back to my room. Hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend.
