Tour of the bridge - 5 September

All of the passengers get an opportunity to sign up for a tour of the ship’s bridge and I was able to sign up for a tour after the Global Studies class. A group of seven (including me) were led to the bridge and given an overview of all of the equipment that they use. There is a great deal of redundancy with all of the equipment in case something breaks or fails. It was very reassuring to see what care they take with the navigational, fire suppression and communication systems. I even got to sit in the captain’s chair wearing his hat and got my picture taken. See exhibit Dork A.

The library is finally organized and running smoothly. Eileen and I are meeting with our work study students tomorrow night to work out some kinks in the schedule. Now that add/drop is over and their schedules are set we can fill in some of the holes that we still have. We are lucky that the evening hours have been taken care of so that I no longer have to work until 11:00. What a blessing that is. My body is not designed to work that late. The way Eileen and I have split up the day is she takes the morning to 2:00 shift and I take the 2:00-8:00 shift and then the students close up at 11:00. It seems to be working well so far.

We had a faculty/staff/lifelong learners social tonight in the faculty lounge. The deans for the voyage sponsored the party to encourage people to get to know each other a little bit better. I think the open bar really helped with that goal. I had intended to stay for only an hour or so but got to talking with everyone and stayed two hours. I’ll be paying for that in the morning!

I received an invitation to have dinner with the captain on Saturday. All of the faculty, staff, and work study students get an opportunity to have dinner with the captain at some point during the voyage. It’s a special occasion where everyone dresses up and the food is supposed to be really good! I got a picture of the captain during my bridge tour. See exhibit B. I’ll be sure to take good notes. That’s all for today. Blog at you later.
