Dinner Party with our Students - 25 October

Today was a “no class” day for our students so that they could allegedly get caught up on their studies. Mostly, they hung out at the pool and worked on their tans. The overflow tanning area was in front of the faculty/staff lounge so that if you went up there during the day you were treated to the sight of scantily clad bodies baking in the sun. Such a treat.

We had our pictures taken for the S@S yearbook today. The faculty was to gather at 8:30 am at the appointed place and, of course, some were late and threw off the schedule for the rest of the day. I managed to miss the photo for the UVa group because I misread the schedule. Oops.

Since it was “no class” day, Eileen and I staffed the library by ourselves and gave our students the day off for studying. It was easy to tell which teachers were giving tests because they were our primary customers today. All of the other students pretty much avoided us like the plague today and spent the time by the pool. It made for a rather quiet day.

We shut the library down for a couple of hours so that we could all have a special dinner for the library staff. Eileen and I treated our students to a private dinner in a separate dining area and with wait staff who treated us like royalty. I could get used to that. I really enjoy the company of our students and it was fun to talk to them outside of the work area and find out more about them. I’ve included the official photo from the evening. To identify everyone from left to right:

Tasha, Eileen, Me (Kathy), Becky (in front), Lee, Kelly, and Fiamma.

Eileen and I consider ourselves very lucky to have such a great group of students working with us. They make our job so much more pleasurable (not to mention easy). Dinner was wonderful too. It was a nice change from the usual dining hall fare that we usually deal with.

After dinner, Eileen and I went upstairs to the last Sea Social of the voyage but didn’t stay for too long. I didn’t recognize a single song that they played during the 20 minutes that I sat there. Isn’t that a sign of old age? When did I get old? I thought that by having nieces and nephews share their music with me I was staying current with the songs but apparently it doesn’t work that way. I’m so depressed. I need chocolate. I went back to my cabin to listen to my niece’s song list on my iPod and inject some youthful vitality back into me…although I think the chocolate will work better. Maybe I need some Botox too. Nah, just chocolate.
